In Zambia nearly every part of the chicken is consumed including the intestines (they are deep fried), the gizzard (it is given to the person of honor at the meal), the feet (still haven't found where the meat is on the feet?), and the smaller bones (once they have been fried they are crisp and tasty.
Two chicken houses have been constructed and chickens are raised 400 at a time. Some are "sold" to the Village for cost the the rest are sold at the market in Kitwe. Our plans are to eventually begin to raise layers and sell eggs. There is a high demand for eggs and the business can be very profitable for the Orphanage, however the start-up costs are also high.
Joe Mbewe is overseeing this project which in addition to food for the children brings in about $200 per month in income for FCV.
